Omens of Winter?

I wonder if anyone else has noticed this:  the birds around my way seem to be growing rather larger (fatter) than in previous years.  Actually, it’s not just the birds, as the dogs (and the cat) have also gained a bit more weight than usual for this time of year.

Aside from which, from a distance the yew tree almost looks more red than evergreen.   I have become used to seeing two crops of berries on the yew if there is to be any amount of snow over winter; we’ve had only one this year thus far.

Could these be signs we are in for another long, draw-out winter?   Yes, it snowed early last year and winter seemed to drag, so I wonder if it will be the same this year and nature is preparing?
