I have been attempting to watch the programmes on the poetry of Britain currently being broadcast by BBC4, as part of its poetry season. Last night, I caught most of the episode on an Orcadian poet, George Mackay Brown, who lived most of his life in Stromness.
I had never heard of George Mackay Brown before, and I have to say after listening to his work, I don’t know why. His words cut right through me and spoke to my soul and its rare I can say that about anyone. Sure, the programme focussed on the one poem, “Hamnavoe“, but it left me wanting to read and/or listen to more.
I will certainly endeavour to read more of his work in the future. I only hope it lives up to what was shown in “A Poet’s Guide to Britain: George Mackay Brown“.
